The nasal septum is the wall between the nostrils. It is rarely perfectly straight; a deviated septum means one side is narrower. Many people have mild deviation with no symptoms. When airflow is blocked, you may notice chronic congestion, preference for sleeping on one side, snoring, or recurrent sinus issues.
Symptoms
- One-sided or alternating nasal obstruction
- Mouth breathing or dry mouth at night
- Facial pressure if sinus drainage is affected
- Nosebleeds from a dry, exposed edge of the septum
Causes
Developmental (present from youth) or traumatic (sports injury, accident). An ENT examination with nasal endoscopy when needed clarifies severity.
Treatment
Medical options include saline rinses, nasal steroid sprays, and allergy management. If structural blockage remains significant and affects sleep or sinus health, surgery (septoplasty) may be discussed with a surgeon—Shalaaki provides assessment and referral coordination as appropriate.
