Refractive errors—including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia—are the most common reasons people need glasses or contact lenses. At Shalaaki Eye and ENT Clinic in Bangalore, our eye clinic team helps you understand your prescription, protect long-term eye health, and combine modern care with Ayurvedic-informed wellness where appropriate.
What is myopia?
Myopia means distant objects look blurry while near objects are clearer. The eye may be slightly too long or the cornea too curved, so light focuses in front of the retina. It often starts in childhood and can progress; outdoor time and good visual habits matter, especially for children—discuss your child’s case with an eye specialist.
Hyperopia and astigmatism
Hyperopia makes near work harder for some people, especially when young or as focusing ability changes. Astigmatism causes blur or distortion at any distance because the cornea is not evenly curved. Both are correctable with lenses or, when suitable, refractive surgery—after full evaluation elsewhere; we focus on examination, prescription, and monitoring.
Presbyopia (after ~40)
Near vision naturally becomes harder with age as the lens inside the eye stiffens. Reading glasses, bifocals, progressives, or monovision contacts are common solutions. Regular eye checks also screen for cataract and glaucoma, which become more common with age.
Why regular eye exams matter
Blurry vision isn’t always “just” refractive error. Dry eye, infection, or other conditions can mimic or add to the problem. Children with uncorrected myopia may struggle at school; adults may get headaches from outdated prescriptions.
