Otitis externa is infection or inflammation of the outer ear canal—the tube from the ear opening to the eardrum. It is often called swimmer’s ear because moisture can soften the skin and allow bacteria or fungi to grow.
Symptoms
- Ear pain that worsens when pulling the outer ear
- Itching or fullness in the canal
- Discharge or odour
- Temporary hearing muffling
Common causes
Water exposure, humid climate, cotton bud use, eczema or psoriasis in the ear, and minor scratches from cleaning. Diabetes can increase risk of severe infection (malignant otitis externa)—urgent care is essential if pain is severe or you feel unwell.
Treatment
An ENT specialist examines the ear (often after cleaning debris), may take a swab if infection recurs, and prescribes ear drops—antibiotic, antifungal, or steroid combinations as appropriate. Avoid putting objects or home oils in the ear unless your doctor advises.
Prevention
Dry ears gently after swimming, use ear protection if prone to infections, and avoid inserting buds deep into the canal.
